Why Buy the 2018 Hyundai Elantra

With good fuel economy, above-average cargo space, and lots of features, the Hyundai Elantra has been a favorite among compact car shoppers shortly after it debuted in 1990. The 2018 model year continues the fifth generation of the Hyundai vehicle with little to no changes. There are six trims to choose from: SE, SEL, Value Edition, Eco, Sport, and Limited.

Chicago IL - 2018 Hyundai Elantra Overview

Exterior - Reasons Why Buy the Elantra

Designed as a four-door sedan, the new 2018 Hyundai vehicle starts with standard exterior features like projector halogen headlights and dual fold-away power side mirrors. On the SEL and higher, the headlights can automatically turn on and off to adjust to the amount of outdoor light, and the side mirrors have heating ability. Going with the Value Edition and higher, the sedan gets a hands-free smart trunk. The Sport and Limited are the only trims with high-intensity headlights and LED taillights (instead of halogen ones), as well as turn-signal indicators on the side mirrors. They further stand apart with the racing-style front grille, front and rear fascias, and sill extensions on the Sport, and a chrome front grille on the Limited. At the base level, the sedan gets 15-inch steel wheels. The SEL and Value Edition ride on 16-inch alloy wheels, the Eco has 15-inch ones, and the Limited has 17-inch ones. The Sport has the largest wheels, as it rides on 18-inch alloy wheels.

Designed as a five-seater, the 2018 model provides 95.8 cubic feet of passenger volume, with the trunk yielding 14.4 cubic feet of cargo space. Comfort and convenience features on the car include Bluetooth® wireless technology for hands-free phone calling and audio streaming, an AM/FM radio tuner, six-speaker audio, and front-seat 6-way adjustment. Going with the SEL adds HD Radio™, a 7-inch touchscreen, a complimentary three-month SiriusXM® satellite radio subscription, and Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay™ for smartphone-based control.

The mid-level Value Edition introduces front-seat heating ability, proximity key entry, and push-button engine ignition. The Sport and Limited stand out from the rest with their leather-trimmed seats. Exclusive to the Limited trim are a 6-way power-adjustable driver's seat with power lumbar support; and three-year complimentary subscriptions to the Blue Link® Connected Care and Remote Package suites for functions such as automatic collision notification, remote lock/unlock, SOS emergency assistance, and monthly vehicle health monitoring. Because it's the racing-style trim, the Sport stands out with red contrast stitching on its leather upholstery. Worthy of note: dual-zone automatic climate control appears on the Value Edition, Eco, and Limited; a power tilt-and-slide moonroof is standard on the Value Edition and Sport; and a garage-door opener and auto-dimming rearview mirror are exclusive to the Value Edition and Limited.

Mechanical / Powertrain - Request More Information

The standard engine on the sedan is a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder (I4), which produces 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque. True to its naming, the Eco, as the most fuel-efficient trim, has the most unique powertrain configuration: a tiny, turbocharged 1.4-liter I4 with an output of 128 horsepower and 156 lb-ft of torque and glued to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. (The other trims have a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic.) The Sport is also unique-with a 1.6-liter turbocharged I4 that produces 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. However, it shares its standard 6-speed manual transmission with the base-level SE. Typically, the car has a MacPherson strut front and couple torsion beam rear suspension for absorbing road turbulence. On the Sport, the rear suspension is replaced with a multi-link design for a firmer, sportier ride. While the SE and Eco have front disc and rear drum brakes, the others have an all-wheel disc brake layout for quicker response when you press the brake pedal. Notably, the Sport has larger disc brakes for even greater stopping ability.

Safety - Why Buy with Safety Features

For cushioning and restraint in the event of a collision, the 2018 Hyundai Elantra has a driver's knee airbag, dual front impact airbags, dual side impact airbags, and dual side curtains. Other standard safety features include electronic stability and traction control, a driver's blind spot mirror, an anti-lock braking system, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, daytime running lights (DRLs), and an anti-theft system that includes remote keyless entry and a panic alarm. On the SEL trim and higher, the car also has a rearview camera with dynamic guidelines, with an upgrade from the driver's blind spot mirror to a robust blind spot detection system with rear cross-traffic alert and lane change assist. On the Value Edition and higher, brighter and longer-lasting LEDs replace the DRLs' halogen bulbs. Exclusive to the Limited is dynamic bending light technology for improved illumination.
