Why Buy the 2018 Hyundai Accent

Arriving in 1994, the Hyundai Accent has spent the past two decades or so being refined as a strong subcompact car choice. And by the time the fourth generation of production bowed out, it had a lot of things going for it: a smooth ride, more than one type of body style (four-door sedan and five-door hatchback), a high level of affordability, and perhaps the most generous warranty in the industry. At the 2017 Orange County International Auto Show, Hyundai unveiled the model that will begin the nameplate's fifth production cycle. This model, known as the 2018 Hyundai Accent, is split into SE, SEL, and Limited trims. And this time, it will be only available as a sedan. (Based on previous sales numbers, 75 percent of buyers went with this body style.)

Chicago IL - 2018 Hyundai Accent Overview

Exterior - Reasons Why Buy the Accent

With the redesign, the car looks sharper than ever-defined by a trapezoid grille, large slanting headlights, and sculpted sides. The body is made of 54.5-percent high-strength steel for increased sturdiness and decreased weight. Power side mirrors are standard, with heating ability and a driver's blind-side mirror enhancing them if you go with the SEL. Also, on the SEL, the steel wheels give way to 15-inch alloy ones, and the headlights can automatically turn on or off depending on the amount of light outside. On the Limited, the vehicle has 17-inch alloy wheels, and the halogen headlights are upgraded with projector-style ones.

With two rows of seats, the 2018 model can fit up to five people. The trunk yields 13.7 cubic feet of cargo space, with the 60/40 split-folding rear seats enabling you to expand it into the cabin. Front seating includes a 6-way adjustable driver seat that includes height adjustment; front-seat heating capability is added on the top-level Limited trim. For comfort and convenience, the car starts off with features like cruise control, remote keyless entry, four-speaker audio, an AM/FM radio tuner, a USB port and auxiliary audio jack for hooking up mobile devices, Bluetooth® wireless technology for hands-free phone calling and audio streaming, a trial subscription to SiriusXM® satellite radio, and a 5-inch color touchscreen.

Getting the mid-level SEL introduces changes or additions such as a 7-inch color touchscreen (in place of the 5-inch), dual charging-only USB ports, and Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay™ for executing infotainment controls with your smartphone. Exclusive to the Limited are proximity key entry (which enables you to lock/unlock the door without pressing the key fob), push-button engine start, a power sunroof, and automatic climate control. Notably, the 2018 model year marks the first time that the car has the Blue Link® telematics system. Standard on the Limited trim, Blue Link® gives you a range of capabilities that includes automatic collision notification, roadside assistance, SOS emergency assistance, and vehicle health monitoring.

Mechanical / Powertrain - Request More Information

For the new model, the powertrain has been revised for improved responsiveness and fuel economy. The 1.6-liter Gamma II inline 4-cylinder engine on previous iterations now provides 130 horsepower and 119 lb-ft of torque. The engine is typically mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, with the option of getting a 6-speed automatic transmission instead. Fuel economy is measured at 28/37 mpg with the standard manual gearbox and a slightly better 28/38 mpg with the automatic. The MacPherson strut front and torsion axle rear suspension has been updated to better shield you from road turbulence, and the motor-driven power steering is still around for precise and crisp turning and cornering. On the SEL and Limited, the rear drum brakes are replaced by rotor discs for an all-wheel disc brake layout.

Safety - Why Buy with Safety Features

For restraint and cushioning in the event of a crash, the sedan comes with dual front impact airbags, which face the driver and front passenger; dual side impact airbags, which are installed on the front seats, and two side curtain airbags installed on the roof for head protection of all occupants. Also standard are a rearview camera with dynamic parking guidelines and electronic stability control for maintaining your intended driving path. Exclusive to the Limited is automatic emergency braking to assist in preventing or mitigating a crash.
